“We go to the Paddock on a monthly or every other month basis. We love the food-delicious and never disappoints. You can't beat the prices.
I love good food without breaking the bank.
My husband loves Michael's soups in particular. My sister loves the pizza. Michael is a great chef!! The wait staff are friendly, competent and go out of their way to make you feel welcome. I would recommend the restaurant whole heartedly .

“Hi Colleen,

I just wanted to thank you and Michael for the wonderful meal we had on Friday night.  Thank you also for the delicious shrimp and garlic bread (on the house)....you didn't have to do that!    We will definitely be back for more good food.

“If you  are looking for special Italian and Portuguese cuisine . You have come to the right place ! For those with discerning taste, yearning for great atmosphere and superior service try The Paddock Restaurant. Their variety of pizza's whether eat-in or TAKE OUT are terrific. If you add the quality of great adult beverages and absolutely friendly service you have hit a home run out of the park !  The Colonel . . . .

LOVE the place! The food is great, portions are generous and the price is right. The service was a bit slow last time I was there, but it was worth the wait! Can't wait to go back!”

Love this place!  Every time I come out from Cali to visit friends/relatives, we come here.  The pizza is great (reminds me of Amici's, a pizzeria here in the S.F. Bay Area owned by a Boston transplant!), but don't miss any of the Portuguese specials on the menu.  Very good w/ fresh ingredients and just the right amount of spice!  Really friendly staff and comfortable throw-back atmosphere.  Nothing generic about this place!  Makes for a fun evening out with friends.

Ordered delivery, the food arrived hot and crisp. It looked wonderful and tasted the same. Really nice fried calimari esp. - a little greasy, sure - duh, it's fried. That's okay every now and then! Tasted fresh, big pieces. The sauce was maybe a touch anemic but that's okay too - again, tasted fresh! The mixed green salad looks lovely, and comes with more than greens, like olives and tomatoes (good olives, good tomatoes) - a small roll might have been a nice accompaniment but nothing to take points off for.

Didn't give 5 stars because it's just my first time and I want to keep trying stuff until I commit, but boy, this was a promising first taste!

I just love this place.  The chicken and broccoli alfredo is my favorite dish and my second favorite is the steak tips.  I have experienced the Paddock old and new; and the new owners have really turned this restaurant around.

The last years of the old Paddock were horrible.  There is no other way to put it; but I am so glad I decided to give it a second chance.  If you don't experience the savory flavors and friendly atmosphere, you are missing out.

I have read some of the reviews and I am glad to see a majority of them are good, honest reviews.  There a couple of really poor reviews that seem to be more vindictive than honest and that really is too bad.

If you haven't been back yet, you should give it another try.  You won't be disappointed.”

“We have visited the Paddock a few times for dinner and always have had a wonderful meal.  My husband loves Seafood and enjoyed every bite and I on the other hand enjoyed every bite of my steak tips and veggies.  We live on the North Shore and wished they would move their restaurant closer to us!”

“Came here a few weeks ago, had delicious food and wonderful service. The pasta was plentiful and the people there were nice. Reminds me of small Italian restaurants from back home in CA. Also a great place to study on the weekdays (they offer free wifi!).”

“What a wonderful, genuine place to eat and drink!  In an era of trendy nonsense and hipster chic, it's great to find a place where real people make real food that tastes great and is affordable.

Even if you're not a soup fan you must try whatever Portuguese soup of the day they are offering.  Real, rich broth with delicious, seasonal ingredients, often with a hint of pop from linquica.   From there you cannot go wrong with any of their seafood dishes.  I've had their fried haddock, the scallops, fish stews, and all have been great.  If you're not the mood for that, head for their pizza and you will be very happy.  It features thin, flavorful crust made in house, and rich garlicky tomato sauce, topped with whatever your favorite topping might be.

I enjoy the atmosphere too, set by the friendly and ever present owner/chef and his wife.  Everyone is quick to learn your name, and there's nothing so welcoming as wondering in to a restaurant and being personally greeted.

Next time you're in the mood for a relaxing bite to eat and a drink, you can do little better than to head over to The Paddock.”

“The Paddock is on our speed-dial. We order their pizza for delivery once a week.  The pizza is consistently good, arrives fast and hot.  Dining in the establishment leaves a lot to be desired.  They have a rather paltry beer selection, but an awesome bartender, who keeps the frosted mugs a-comin.   Everytime I have ordered something crazy, like... say an antipasto salad I have been disappointed.

Stick with the delivery option and enjoy a fantastic pizza!”

“This restaurant is a wonderful surprise tucked away in Somerville. The food is great, the pizza is some of the best around. It has a bartender that makes the best martinis in the Boston area, a very pleasant surprise in this cozy little place! The staff and owners are so nice, so friendly and welcoming, they make it all around the best little neighborhood restaurant you want to be a regular at! I highly recommend the Paddock! We went once and never stopped”

“I love the Paddock!  Why -  some may ask?  The people are wonderful, the martinis are the best in town...........best in Boston as a matter of fact!  Louie is hands down the best bartender around!! Colleen and Michael DaCova make you feel as welcome as a member of the family.

I first discovered The Paddock when I moved to the area and was curious what it was all about.  A friend of mine and I did some inadvertant bar hopping last March and our last stop was The Paddock.  We were a bit nervous as there were not that many people in there - wondering if it were a bad omen.  We ordered wine and then switched to martinis.....if you are having trouble deciding.....simply pick a color and you can't go wrong.

I decided that night to celebrate my birthday there a few months later.  Michael and Colleen couldn't have been nicer!  They allowed 23 of my friends to have half the restaurant and even participated in the celebration.  They made my night that much more special - the people who work at the Paddock - Colleen, Michael, Louie, and their crew - are the reason I go back.  I will say some of the wait staff have been less than great - but they have replaced some of the dead weight with some really friendly faces!

I love that this is a place that if I didn't want to cook, could belly up to the bar and enjoy a meal and nice conversation with the people around.  I continue to go back regularly, though not as regularly as I would like!!!  I have brought many new friends and family there- and have celebrated other birthdays and holiday events.

This past weekend I brought my friends to celebrate the holidays.  I made appetizers and dessert and let the Paddock do the cooking!!!  They had a wonderful drink menu for us and made us feel very comfortable.  They did not treat us like a burden having a big group there having to serve us like other places would be.  I was pleasantly surprised on this visit to see more people there.

So what about the food?  I LOVE Colleen's Special Pizza - in fact the pizza is great.  If you order the garlic and oil pizza you will have a lot of oil on the pizza - but I still enjoyed it - my sister devoured it!  The steak tips are fabulous!  I have ordered the meal and the caesar salad.  The stuffed shrimp are really light and great.  The french onion soup is decent......I must admit that I can't find anyone to beat my Mom's recipe - so that I think it is decent - means it is pretty good!

I will say this....the beer and wine menu aren't the greatest - however, I don't like beer so that doesn't bother me.  I understand how others could rate it less for this reason.  The wine list was just ok, but again, since I found the martinis....that doesn't bother me either!

It does bother me that dining room doesn't seem to be filled that much!  It really should be!!!!  I am really routing for The Paddock!!!”

This might be the best value for an incredible meal anywhere in/near Boston.  Absolutely perfect for a date; two entrees and wine (the Portuguese Casala Garcia is phenomenal) come in around $50, and the entrees are unbeatable.  The specials are ridiculously good - nobody can do steak quite like Michael Dacova, cooked to order to perfection with sauces that are untouchable.  I have never been disappointed with anything I've had, from the unbelievably tasty pizza, perfectly sauce/cheese proportioned, to chicken, pasta, steak...you name it.

The fact that they deliver is almost too good to be true, but the friendly staff will soon make you forget that option and come in.  I wish I could be emailed the specials daily so that I don't miss anything.

If you haven't given The Paddock a try, you seriously don't know what you're missing.

This might be the most underrated chef in all of Boston.  Michael Dacova just served us up the most delicious meal, with a bottle of wine, for under 50 bucks, two people.

2 Unbelievable entrees + Bottle of wine = Under $50!!!

1. Stuffed NY Strip Steak, stuffed with swiss and bacon, absolutely mouth-watering.  The man is the master of steak sauces.  Served with mashed potato and delicious beans, this thing literally was one of the tastiest things i've ever tasted.

2. Portuguese-style half chicken with rice and fresh vegetables.  The spices on the chicken are perfect, and was the slightly crispy skin.  The thing is huge, more like a whole chicken anywhere else.  Served with the perfect complement of rice and fresh vegetable.  Huge portion here folks, $11.95.

Honestly I don't know why this place isn't just packed, tell your relatives, tell your friends, Michael Dacova is a Top Chef and The Paddock serves up gourmet entrees for short money.

Also, last night we had a $6 (that's right, six bucks) perfectly cooked large pizza that might be the best pizza in town.

Very friendly staff, they do have beer on draft now contrary to a previous review, and the pizza is delicious!  As is everything i've tried on the menu, namely the 16oz sirloin steak w/ the peppercorn sauce for under 20 bucks, the chicken ziti and broccoli is also fantastic and a huge portion, for 10 bucks.  Internet jukebox, great mixed drinks, and a colorful and friendly atmosphere make this place a great date destination, a great place to just sit and have some drinks, and on the weekends at night after 10pm you will find the dance floor hoppin'!

“I ate at the Paddock Restaurant with a couple of my friends last night. The bar was almost full and their were a couple of tables taken. Our waitress treated us very well and we appreciated that. I ordered shrimp scampi for myself and OH BOY! My dish looked so professional. I did not know where I should start because It looked so nice! After my friends and I were finished eating, we were stuffed! We were surprised at our bill though because it was not expensive. Food like that shouldn't be that cheap. When we were leaving, one of the owners thanked us for coming, with a smile on her face. I am DEFINITELY going back to the Paddock Restaurant, and I hope you are too. It is a great place to go. The prices are decent, which is great for people who are on a budget because of this economy today.”

“Visit the Paddock Again!  We have been fans of the place for over twenty years, great thin crust pizza and steak tips and the coldest beer in town.  That was 20+ years ago..well now under new management they made it better.  In addition to a badly needed touching up and updated seating, the menu has been dramatically expanded.  Still available are the same old favorites along with some interesting add ons to the fish and pasta options.  During of the few times we have visited in the last several month, the Chief placed some interesting "home" grown receipes on the board.  Still a place to go for a great dics (pizza) and cold beer, but we orded the broiled seafood platter and sauted chicked with pasta with fresh veggies all in heaping portions.  Literally the plates are twice the size they use to be and you'll be bringing it home a meal for the next day.  Don't be fooled by the spacious dining room with some empty seats, as mentioned in a previous review...no different than any other restaurant in this economy. The Paddock is worth a try AGAIN, and for the first time too!”

Michael and Coleen:

Both you and the staff has always treated us extremely well. You’re food is exceptional; I can’t imagine dining out any where else. The prices are extremely reasonable, which I would think cannot be duplicated in other restaurants of this caliber. Michael is an exceptional chef and truly aims to please one’s taste. I hope that the word gets around the area that the Paddock’s is a great place to dine. I have had all my family functions, wedding anniversary etc; in you’re main dining room and have never been disappointed. I do hope that more people will frequent the restaurant and share the enjoyment that my family and me have come to expect.

Colleen and Michael – OK – one of my all-time favorite dishes is Seafood  Fra Diablo  -- but I’ve never had a plate as delicious as the one you sent me home with last night – WOW – is that always on the menu? – Because if it is – I know what I’m ordering when I come back with my wife.

Thank you both for your gracious hospitality – I hope you’ll like the piece when it’s finished and I will definitely spread the word that The Paddock is not to be missed.

Thanks again,

“"Whah Whah Whah, it was greasy."
This is a great place to grab a bite without the "tude" you get at some of the "trendy" spots. Great pizza great bbq sausage (with peppers and onions).
This place is a throwback of what Somerville once was, and I would like this last remaining place to survive.
BTW, how come there aren't any horseshoes on the walls?”

Yelp.com 12/18/08

“I was supremely disappointed by this place because I have heard from everyone that its amazing.  The pizza was greasy and was falling apart when I tried to eat it.  I felt like I was 10lbs heavier after eating just one slice.  I will not be returning”

Yelp.com 2/6/09

“If you're in the area, this place is worth checking out, not so much for the food but for the throwback appeal. Think nailed red vinyl upholstered wooden seats. Service is friendly.

The pizza is good, albeit I wouldn't call it the very best ever. I also once tried an octopus soup there and it was surprisingly delicious. The bar is a fun place for a pint or two and shooting the breeze with whoever is around.”

“Neighborhood Italian-American that won't make you forget real Italian food but is a useful, local alternative to casual dining chain outlets.

Some long-surviving restaurants seem fossilized in amber: the décor, the menu, even the patrons look as though they haven't changed in decades. On a 2007 visit, I was amazed at how exactly the Paddock resembled the Paddock I recall from 20 years ago, when it was a favorite of my Somerville-native boss. But change (a little, anyway) has finally come: former long-time chef Michael DaCova bought and re-opened the place recently, adding bright new paint and barstools but preserving the old horse-tackle décor.

Menu-wise, DaCova's still dancing with the girl that brung him, serving large portions of Italian-American favorites, fried seafood (sautéed and baked, too), sandwiches, and pizza. Nightly specials allow him to express his Portuguese side in dishes such as a pretty authentic-tasting Portuguese pork soup ($3.25/cup; $4.25/bowl) with pork shoulder, kale, kidney beans, and bowtie pasta, served with warm rolls and butter. Long-beloved dishes are still there and very fine, like a plate of five huge marinated steak tips ($10) with heaps of fries (decent) and vegetables (frozen). A chicken piccata includes three big scallops of thin-pounded breast in a sauce that maybe could show clearer lemon and caper flavors, but you'd feel uncharitable pointing it out, given the price ($12) and size (it's served over what must be a pound of linguine).

Pizza is quite respectable in the thin-crust, lightly sauced Neapolitan mode ($6.50/small cheese; $9.50/large); it ought to appeal to adherents of similar pies from better-known outlets like the original Pizzeria Regina and Santarpio's. A hefty garden salad ($3.25) is straight out of the '50s: torn iceberg lettuce, prefab croutons, winter tomatoes, and too much dressing. The biggest surprise might be that prices are actually lower than those under previous ownership, making this a very family-friendly dining destination. If it's a just world, locals will come here when they want a casual, reliable night out with inexpensive drinks and down-to-earth service, and shun those execrable casual-dining chains.”

Yelp.com 9/28/08

“This restaurant is a staple in the Winter Hill area and has been since the 1960's.  Long before Somerville's gentrification era, this restaurant was a popular bar and dining spot for the blue collar residents in the area.

Before the new ownership (the chef I believe) took over, the pizza here was the best around and by a large margin.  Unfortunately, the pizza is not the same, although it is still worth the money, in my opinion.

The appetizers are mediocre at best, as a whole.  The fried calamari has a bland taste because of it's breading.  The portions are deffinately a worthy size, for the most part.

I recommend the Chicken Piccata with ziti.  This traditional pasta dish is a good sized meal, and is the most tasty dish on the menu.

The bar has been renovated somewhat recently and the draft selection is respectable.

Nothing to write home about, but worth a visit.”

I just had the Calamari Siciliano appetizer and it is definitely my favorite meal on the planet!.
The specials today include stuffed Lobster and the soup of the day is Chicken and Meatball Escarole and Chile Con Carne.
The Appetizers are Fried Zucchini and Summer Squash Sticks with Peppercorn Dressing, Teriyaki Chicken Wings, and Chicken Livers wrapped in Bacon.
The entrees are Sauteed Calves Liver (one of my favorites) with onions and Bacon and served with Mashed Potatos, gravy and veggie, Bowl of Tripe with Garlic Bread (a hard to find meal nowadays), Roast Pork Dinner with mashed, stuffingpand vegetable, BBQ Ribs with fries and Cole Slaw or Potato or rice and veggie, and Turkey Pot Pie with mashed and gravy.
Desserts are NY Style Cheesecake with berries and cream, Oreo Cookie with Mousse Pie, Tiramisu and Homemade Grapenut Custard.
All meals are cooked to order and they deliver to Somerville, Medford, Cambrideg and Charlestown with Free Delivery.

My wife and I moved into the neighborhood about a year ago, and went to The Paddock on a whim based on online reviews.  The pizza was amazing-- the best we had ever had in the Boston area.  Some of the other reviewers from that time mention the quirkiness that existed, so we mostly stuck to take-out.

Then the new owners took over.  It's still essentially the same place, with a better bar, and expanded menu.  Let's make this clear at the start-- this is not a high-end restaurant.  It is, however, a great neighborhood restaurant, serving mostly Italian and Portuguese-American fare.  The specials for the night are written out on lined paper and copied on a Xerox; the horse tchotskies are still on the wall; the servers are mostly attentive and friendly.

I have brought my parents to the Paddock, and both like it.  We order out regularly because of the convenience (although the pizza quality has dropped a bit, but then so have the prices).  While I wouldn't bring a first date here, it's a place that should be visited if you live in the area, bar none.”

“UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP!!!!!!  DEF WORTH ANOTHER TRY!!!!

so wow-i had been here once before and thought grrr...is this bada bad bing from the Sopranos?  The former owner was a a bit weird...always in his sweat suit uniform and irritating which I was warned and which was true!

Tonight i got picked up downtown and en-route towards medford we decided to stop in since the Chef had taken over ownership and there was a ton of traffic.

I must tell you they did an incredible job in their renovations-so much brighter, updated and clean-but keeping the theme with some very cool kitschy items.  It's still a local watering/dining joint but a great one with some loyal followers.  We initially had no plans to eat but fell victim to the amazing scents....ok...looking at the menu I was  blown away by the prices-but we already knew the food was  awesome-the chef rocks and will make to order,  Most entrees were 10-15 bucks and HUGE!  We got the chix parm and mussels made to order-both devoured--we almost licked the plate.  So reasonable-thy have a superb prime rib plate on (I think) saturdays or sun-which I understand is outrageous!

We ate at the bar-AWESOME service-I could see a large group having a blast here--plenty of space and they are more than willing to accommodate.

If you had a marginal experience here before you will be pleasantly surprised-it's a different atmosphere-totally!   Loyals who stopped going are now returning and they have a mean Superbowl Party planned with free apps-I just may attend! Give them a try-I think you'll be pleasantly def satisfied and perhaps find a new place to b a regular!”
